Israel eliminated IRGC Navy Commander Admiral Alireza Tangsiri in a strike on Bandar Abbas, confirmed by the IDF and the US. Tangsiri commanded IRGC naval forces since 2018 and was the primary architect of the Hormuz blockade, the mine-laying campaign, and the selective toll regime. IRGC Navy intelligence chief Behnam Rezaei was killed in the same operation. Iran has not confirmed either death.
Tangsiri’s removal decapitates IRGC naval command but does not change the operational reality at Hormuz. Mines remain deployed, the toll system is running, and Iran’s parliament is now drafting legislation to codify transit fees into law. Lawmaker Rezaei Kouchi confirmed parliament is pursuing a bill to “formally codify Iran’s sovereignty, control and oversight over the Strait of Hormuz.” Bloomberg reported the bill is expected next week.
