TankerBrief is an independent intelligence desk covering maritime chokepoints and the energy markets they move. A situation brief has been published every day since March 1, 2026, the first day of the Strait of Hormuz crisis. The desk has published 123 briefs to date, alongside 21 country assessments, scenario reports with explicit probability calls, and deep-dive analysis. Everything is timestamped and stays in the archive: the correct calls and the wrong ones alike.

The Harbormaster

TankerBrief's analysis is written in one voice: The Harbormaster. The Harbormaster is a persona, not a person. There is no headshot, no resume, and no claim to a career at sea, and we will never invent one. We use a persona for the same reason ships fly signal flags: it makes the message legible. Judge this desk the way any harbormaster is judged, by the accuracy of the ledger.

The editor

The desk is built, directed, and reviewed by its founder and editor, who publishes under the pen name Gerald Y. Mahir. The pen name keeps the person out of the story; the accountability stays. He is the human hand on the tiller, and press, corrections, and institutional inquiries reach him at gerald@tankerbrief.com.

Method

The desk synthesizes public reporting from wire services, official statements, vessel-tracking data, and market prices. Three rules govern what publishes:

  • Conservative by default. Claims we cannot corroborate are labeled unverified or single-sourced, and we would rather undercount than overclaim.
  • Probabilities in the open. Scenario calls are stated as explicit ranges and revised publicly as the situation changes, not quietly rewritten.
  • The archive is the track record. Briefs are not edited after publication to make old calls look better. Recent briefs are reserved for subscribers for 48 hours, then open to everyone.

How TankerBrief is produced

TankerBrief is produced by an automated analytical system. Software monitors sources around the clock, drafts the analysis, and runs fact-checking passes before anything publishes. The system is built, directed, and reviewed by its human operator, who is accountable for everything that appears here. If you are wondering whether a machine wrote what you are reading: yes, one with a human hand on the tiller. We think the right way to judge any desk, staffed or automated, is the same: is it right, is it early, and is it honest when it is wrong.
