What Happened

President Trump posted on Truth Social at 23:44 GMT Saturday: “If Iran doesn’t FULLY OPEN, WITHOUT THREAT, the Strait of Hormuz, within 48 HOURS from this exact point in time, the United States of America will hit and obliterate their various POWER PLANTS, STARTING WITH THE BIGGEST ONE FIRST!”

Iran’s military responded immediately: the Strait will be “completely closed” if the US acts on the threat. Parliament speaker Ghalibaf warned that “vital infrastructure as well as energy and oil infrastructure” across the region would become “legitimate targets” the moment Iran’s own is attacked.

Why It Matters

The ultimatum creates a binary outcome by Monday evening. If Trump follows through, Iran has promised to reverse the selective blockade to full closure and escalate to regional infrastructure targeting. If Trump backs down, the ultimatum loses credibility and Iran’s leverage grows. Neither path leads to de-escalation.

The selective blockade allowed ~10-15 vessels/day to transit. Full closure returns flow to zero. Regional infrastructure targeting could hit Saudi, UAE, and Qatari energy assets that supply ~25% of global oil and LNG.

What to Watch

  • Deadline: Monday 7:44 PM ET. Countdown is live.
  • Iran’s Hormuz posture. Any shift from selective blockade to full closure would signal Iran believes the threat is credible.
  • Brent Monday open. Nuclear escalation weekend plus ultimatum; expect a significant gap higher.
  • Coalition response. Whether the 22-nation coalition distances from or endorses the ultimatum.
